Christine Stevens

Christine Stevens passed away in October. With her compassion, conviction, wisdom and grace Christine Stevens shaped and propelled human perceptions and laws towards animals. Called the "Mother of the Animal Protection Movement", she was founder of the Animal Welfare Institute in 1951 and the Society for Animal Protective Legislation in 1955, but only a big book could list all her astonishing accomplishments over fifty years.

Dr. Jane Goodall said, "Christine Stevens was a giant voice for animal welfare. Passionate, yet always reasoned, she took up one cause after another and she never gave up. Millions of animals are better off because of Christine's quiet and very effective advocacy."

Mrs. Stevens deserves credit for the Animal Welfare Act, the Marine Mammal Protection Act, the Endangered Species Act, the Humane Slaughter Act, the Wild Bird Conservation Act, and for so much more, including being an incredible inspiration to all who were honored to know her.
