Whales Alive! - Vol. XII No. 1 - January 2003

Upcoming Events

The European Cetacean Society's 17th Annual Conference will focus on Marine Mammals and Sound, which is particularly appropriate given the local history of strandings related to military sonar use. The conference will be hosted on 9-13 March 2003 by the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain), and is sponsored by the Environmental Department of the Canary Islands Government. For relevant information about registration, hotels, sponsors and more see http://www.uicmm.ulpgc.es/

The 9th Annual Santa Barbara Whale Festival will be held on 29-30 March 2003 on State Street between the Train Station & Stearns Wharf, Santa Barbara, CA. The festival promises two days of fun, food, arts and crafts. There will be entertainment for the entire family - whale watching tours, diving demonstrations, public tours of the Coast Guard Cutter Blackfin and a rescue/fire demonstration at sea, rubber duck race, whale information-stations and more. Marine artists such as Howard Rosenfeld, Bud Bottoms, Pieter Folkens and others will be present and displaying their work. The festival is sponsored by the Beachside Business Association in partnership with the Stearns Wharf Business Association. Proceeds benefit the Santa Barbara Marine Mammal Center and the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary. For more information contact: The 8th Annual Santa Barbara Whale Festival, P.O.
