Whales Alive! - Vol. XVI No. 2 - April 2007

Sowerby's beaked whales

Sowerby's beaked whales, Mesoplodon bidens, breaching again and again, in pairs! Even the experts have never seen a social display like this from one of the planet's most unknown animals; few people have ever seen this species alive! John McMurray took this incredible sequence over Fish Tails Canyon, during a fishing trip on August, 2006 near the edge of the continental shelf, about 50 miles directly south of Montauk Point. Whale watchers, it's April! Are you ready for anything?
